For those who so kindly offered their interesting, useful and sometimes frightening ideas for why my car is failing... The dealer called and diagnosed the problem as being due to a dead/dying low-pressure fuel pump.

There were codes for both pumps and the HP pump pressure-tested successfully. This is, of course, the least unsurprising diagnosis. They suspect it’s ‘cause the car was run dry last week and the pump picked up some garbage - or maybe just burned out.

So maybe in a day or two we’ll have the car back, but I think I’m gonna insist they drive it around themselves for a bit just to make sure that it doesn’t die again.

And I think I’m going to need to find an independent garage, ‘cause the dealer prices are starting to hurt.

Man, I wish we could get the B7 Passat wagon here - so pretty!

My god that B7 Passat wagon is actually great looking. Never thought I’d say that about a modern VW.

I do have to hand it to the Germans - they do make classy looking vehicles.

Yes, you did guess the fuel pump. Like I said, it’s the least surprising diagnosis. But not cheap! Dealer rates are murder...

Check out some independent shops - Mechanix Files at cartalk.com has a search thingy.

Learn to work on your own car. Seriously a one time $600 repair bill can buy a decent set of tools. Then ditch the crappy vw......I have learned to not touch anything German newer than about 2000. After watch some buddies get screwed by a mk5 Jetta and a mk6 gti both with the 2.0tsi. Yeah screw vw.

I’m pretty handy and have worked on my vehicles on the past. My current situation makes this more difficult: 3 young kids, no garage or driveway, and this is my wife’s daily driver.

I should at least look for an independent garage that has better hourly rates.

Did you make sure your car doesn’t fall under the campaign for the fuel pump tappet and camshaft replacement? If it does and hasn’t been done then VW needs to replace the camshaft and high-pressure fuel pump.

The failed pump was the low-pressure pickup pump in the tank, but I did ask about the possibility of the cam follower problem. It apparently does not apply to my motor, but to previous versions of the 2.0T?

I did get a free intake manifold replacement last week, though.
